Scientists find deepest fish ever recorded at 8,300 metres underwater near Japan

Scientists have captured footage of a fish swimming more than 8km under water, setting a new record for the deepest fish ever recorded. The animal, an unknown snailfish species belonging to the genus Pseudoliparis, was filmed at a depth of 8,336 meters in the Izu-Ogasawara trench, southeast of Japan.
How you can rescue honey bees

Depending on the time of year, we have between 75 to 100 beehives. Many of our colonies were “rescued” after making their home in the side of a barn or chimney, or swarming onto a tree in a residential neighborhood. In the spring, our bees collect nectar from the blueberry and plum blossoms on an […]
Daring Foods CEO talks plant-based chicken: ‘In every retailer, we’re performing above the category average’

While plant-based meat sales have slowed significantly over the past year with many commentators blaming the inflationary environment, Daring—a premium brand deploying pricy high-moisture extrusion to make its plant-based chicken pieces—is going from strength to strength, says co-founder and CEO Ross Mackay, suggesting price is not necessarily what’s holding the category back.
Animals who carry seeds help regenerate forests

Animals are crucial to reforestation, research finds. And yet, the world’s wildlife populations have declined by almost 70% in the last 50 years as humans have destroyed and polluted habitats. Efforts to restore forests have often focused on trees, but a new study [finds] that animals play a key role in the recovery of tree […]

It was already known that about 17 per cent of the rainforest has disappeared as a result of deforestation to make way for farming and development—pumping huge volumes […]

Theropod dinosaur facial reconstruction and the importance of soft tissues in paleobiology

Theropod dinosaurs such as the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex have long been portrayed with their teeth fully visible, similar to extant crocodilians. This pattern of portrayal largely had to do with relatedness between dinosaurs and crocodilians and the relationship between tooth and jaw size.
A happy ending for Tokitae (Lolita)

Tokitae, also called Lolita and named Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut by Washington State’s Lummi Nation, will no longer perform shows at the Miami Seaquarium, where she has been held since she was taken from her home waters in 1970. As a condition of the permit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), new operators of the Florida facility […]
Octopus farming turns my stomach—but are some species really more worthy than others?

I myself don’t eat octopus, and have made a lot of noise about why: they’re as smart as parrots, their brain is spread over their arms, they are many millions of years older than we are–don’t you know that, of all the species on Earth, only they and we share a high-resolution camera eye?
