Motorcycle collides with horse-drawn carriage in Maine

A Thomaston man is in serious condition after colliding with a horse-drawn carriage while he was riding a motorcycle on Route 32 in Jefferson. Stephen Grant, 38, was riding westbound on Waldoboro Road when he approached an incline being ascended by a horse and buggy, said Detective Scott Hayden of Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, who came upon the scene. The driver of the buggy, Noah Hostetler, 21, was not injured; however, passenger Noah Yoder, 22, suffered a back injury and Henry Yoder, 16, had a laceration on his arm. They were treated at the scene. The horse hauling the buggy had minor injuries, Hayden said, and was lame.

Horse-drawn carriages in Denver: Should they stay or should they go?

Di Leonardo says horses are skittish creatures who are sensitive to sound.

Chicago animal welfare group sponsors ‘Anti-Horse Carriage’ Pedicab

Save a horse, ride a bike. That’s the message Chicago Alliance for Animals (CAA) advocates are looking to send by sponsoring one of the pedicabs that shuttles riders up and down the Magnificent Mile and throughout downtown. For about two weeks, a pedicab operated by Pedicab Ride Guys has been outfitted with wraparound signage protesting the city’s horse carriage businesses (pictured at far left). Chicago’s three licensed carriage companies have said they are preserving a tradition that remains popular with both tourists and couples on romantic dates. But others, like CAA campaign director Jodie Wiederkehr, say the practice is inhumane, forcing horses to pull oversized loads while pounding their hooves on pavement for extended periods, at times in extreme heat or cold.

Will horse carriages decide the next mayoral election, too?

In the 2013 New York City mayoral race, Bill de Blasio was trailing the pack when he made a campaign promise to ban the horse carriages in Central Park on “day one.” De Blasio’s pledge brought in support from the animal welfare group New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets, or NYCLASS, whose aggressive attack ads against Christine Quinn were widely believed to help de Blasio overtake the early front-runner and secure the Democratic nomination. Halfway through his second term in office, however, de Blasio hasn’t delivered. He did seek a range of restrictions on the horse carriage industry, most of which fell short, succeeding only in limiting pickups to inside the park.
